“KICK-IN” HAS PLENTY OF KICK; DRAMATIC CLUB SCORES SUCCESS

An audience at the well-filled Memorial Opera House last evening, learned that “Kick In,” a four-act drama by Willard Mack, lives up to its title. It is packed full with ‘kick.’

An audience even larger than the one that greeted the cast on the opening night is expected to attend the presentation this evening, for all those who have witnessed it are enthusiastic in praise of the excellence of the staging, directed by Miss Edna Agar. 

An orchestra under the direction of Miss Ruth Hershman adds to the enjoyment of the program.

The presentation of “Kick In” is made by the newly organized Valparaiso Dramatic club under the sponsorship of the Drum and Bugle Corps of Charles Pratt Post, American Legion. Proceeds are to be used to defray the expense of sending the drum and bugle corps to the national convention of the American Legion, to be held at Detroit.

“Kick In” is a drama. It deals with the lives of the underworld, and of the handicaps faced by men and women who have gone wrong, in attempting to go straight. It tells of the pitfalls placed in the way of their restoration by crafty and hypocritical police methodsーof the sacrifice, by those in authority, of heroic effort on the part of those seeking to make good, to gain promotions.

The production has been on the legitimate stage for yearsーand it demands real dramatic ability on the part of every member of the cast. That the Valparaiso Dramatic club fully measures to the demands made upon it, by the difficult production is the highest commendation that can be given it. There were no weak spots. Characters were well chosen for their parts.

Harvey Varner as the hard-boiled police commissioner who is seemingly merciless, but finally shows that he is human, by giving the ex-convict, Chick Hewes (Herbert Deer) and Molly, his wife (Martha Hughes) another chance for freedom, even though he could have ‘framed’ them, demonstrated real dramatic ability. Henry Eschell was most convincing in his portrayal of Charley, Molly’s dope-fiend brother. From sudden silence to hysterical frenzy, he realistically enacted the gamut of human emotion. Lorraine Kinne, as the ‘ould Irish leddy’ with Lillian Sayers, her daughter, furnished the comedy relief in a play that otherwise was shot full of tense moments. These young ladies have talents so well known that little need be said to picture them in the minds of local home-talent ‘fans.’

Another of the outstanding characters was ‘Myrtle,’ the gangster’s Moll. Irmadell Johnson plays the part as it should be played.

“Memphis Bessie (Mrs. Frank Morton) is one of the toughest Southern Belles that ever reformed. Talking back to the commissioner was one of the best things she ‘didn’t do nothing else but.’ Jack Diggs (Arthur Erickson), one of the best hearted detectives, was nearer right in the solution of the crime than his double-crossing partner, ‘Whip’ Fogarty (Bruce Bornholt). This character was one of the most deceitful, downright ‘ornery’ persons imaginable. Through his offices it was that Chick and Molly nearly went to prison for a crime of which they were innocent.  Stanley Alms was excellent in his part of ‘Old Tom,’ Garvey’s ‘office boy’ policeman (he really should have a pension). The part of Gus, another plain-clothes man was ably handled by Jack Kozlenko.

The talent in the Dramatic club is unusual and could not have made the vivid performance of last evening under a more capable director than Edna Agar. it is almost axiomatic in Valparaiso that ‘if Edna Agar directs, it’s good.” Miss Agar was assisted, last evening, by Miss Babe Sazon.

3-Man Board To Operate Opera House

A three-man board will be invested with the authority to operate the county-owned Memorial Opera House, memorial to veterans of the War of the Rebellion, and long the storm center of fractional fights among various organizations.

This plan was announced by the board of county commissioners Wednesday at the group’s concluding session of its January meeting.

The commissioners’ decision followed recommendations made early in December by special committees of the Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce and Porter County Farm Bureau which spent much time in investigating the matter.

Only one man was named to the board by the commissioners at yesterday’s session. He is Edward F. Sebens, of RFD. 2, Valparaiso. Sebens operates a farm in Porter township.

The commissioners sought James Patrick, secretary-manager of the Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce, to act as a member and fill the office of custodian, but he was unable to take the post because of press of chamber business. The custodian would be in charge of all funds received. He would account to the county commissioners. His salary could not exceed $25 per annum.

To Name Two More

The other two members are expected to be named within the next week. Their names will be made public when the commissioners hold a joint meeting with the county fair board at the office of County Agent M.A. Nye on Wednesday night, Jan. 10, to discuss 1951 fair plans.

In announcing its decision to turn control of the building over to a three-man board, the commissioners liberalized the recommendations submitted by the chamber-farm bureau committees.

The commissioners approved the committee’s suggestions that the building be kept as a memorial to the veterans of the War of the Rebellion, and that it be made available to a reputable non-subversive Porter county organization, association, group or individual for the purpose of holding meetings, gatherings, patriotic celebrations and home talent performances, school functions, symphonies, community concerts lectures, debates and uses of like kind. No meeting, however, will be permitted that is not in the best interests of the county, state and nation.

The hall will not be allowed for use in competition with other industries, though the commissioners said they felt that organizations desiring to bring in outside entertainment should not be barred.

While the new board will be authorized to deny use of the building where they deem the venture not justifiable it cannot deny the people of Porter county the right to use Memorial hall, the commissioners ruled.

Members of the joint committee which submitted the recommendations for the new setup were Paul Carmichael, Tom Womacks, James Patrick, Gale Corley, Vernon Dinse, Alva Jones and Walter Sievers.

The opera house which has been under lease to the Shauer interests for a number of years, is now ready to be taken over by the new board, the Shauer lease having expired Jan. 1.

Recently the county replaced the old heating apparatus in the building with a new one at a cost of around $2,000.

The new board when it takes over will be faced with the problem of no funds. Last fall a $1,500 appropriation for 1951 was eliminated by the county council when it was pointed out that as long as it was not known whether the building would be used an appropriation was unnecessary.

Seams like the court house is goin the way them public works plans has went hear: out the back door.

Now that they is a war in mebee you could tell me how that fite between them too fellers on the drop curtain cum out over to the Memorial Opery House.

When I left town back in 1909 they was about to run one hue trus with a stabber on a gun.

Mebbe you remember the fast one Al. Heineman pulled on the town when he booked a one nite stand of a Burly Cue company and called it a musical komedy.

The komedy part cum when the little cutie over on the right end caught her foot in that little gold chain that ran around the stage. You know the one, strung on them short poles between the orchestra and the foot lights. Well this hear dame had black hair and when she lit out with her right foot she hooked the chain, lost her balance and fell fer the drummer.

Him bein a blond an the girl giving of her life’s blood fer him: havin tore her stockin foar she lit, or was she lit fore she fell; Mebee it as the “Turkish Texan Company or “Mr. Jolly of Jolliette”, I fergit which. Anyhow nobody asked for rain checks so Al kept the 30-70 or 40-60 what was komin to him.

An now dear readers it is time for me to “go to work and take and make my exit” as one of Al’s men would have said.
