Internships

General Information

Founded in 1916, the PoCo Muse is an award-winning museum dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of Porter County, Indiana. Well known for its creative exhibits and programming, the museum re-opened to the public in its fourth home on May 19, 2022.

Why intern at the PoCo Muse?

An internship offers unique opportunities for hands-on professional experiences in a small museum setting. You’ll make an impact as a contributing member of our team.

When do we offer internships?

We offer internships for fall/spring semesters, summer break, and longer holiday breaks. Start and end dates are flexible depending on need and intern availability. We have a limited number of positions available each term, so applicants are encouraged to apply by the following dates for consideration:

  • Fall Semester, July 1

  • Spring Semester, December 1

  • Summer Semester, March 1

  • Focused Internships, Rolling Admission

Who should apply? What qualifications are we looking for?

We are eager to work with current students and recent graduates interested in a future in the museum field and encourage individuals from a broad range of academic backgrounds to apply. Depending on available projects, we can use the talents of students studying marketing, education, graphic design, communications, anthropology, history, art history, english, material culture, cultural studies, and other disciplines.

  • We look for individuals who can think creatively, work independently, take initiative, and adapt to changes.

Time Commitments

Internships are structured to work with an academic schedule and can be completed over a semester, summer break, or longer holiday break. Depending on the level of internship you apply for, we ask that you commit between 5 and 40 hours a week to fulfill internship hour requirements. Interns are required to log time worked through a direct supervisor.

Project and Public Presentation

Intern projects vary depending on area of focus and time commitment. Generally, interns are assigned a primary project, but may be asked to assist with incidental projects throughout the term. The museum requires all interns to contribute to a blog and make a public presentation of their work at the end of the term. This can take the form of a focused tour, lecture, public program, or workshop.

Housing

Limited housing opportunities are available to Level 3 summer interns.
