About the Lowenstine WWII Roll of Honor

In November 1943, members of the Charles Pratt Post #94 of the American Legion had an idea to erect a memorial on the northeast lawn of the Porter County Courthouse in commemoration of the Valparaiso citizens who contributed-and were still contributing-to the war effort during World War II. Local resident and business owner Mandel Lowenstine was the lead benefactor for the project.

The Lowenstine WWII Roll of Honor was displayed on the square from 1943 until 1973. Members of the American Legion Post #94 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #988 voted to renovate the memorial for display at the Porter County Museum, which first opened to the public in May 1975.
