Camp Calumet, Company 1583, of the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937.
Our cadre of living history reenactors will be interpreting the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), which was a “New Deal” work relief program that gave young men and veterans employment on environmental projects during the Great Depression. Company 1583 of the CCC was located in Valparaiso from 1935 until 1942.
Note: Camp for Company 1583 was located on North Calumet Avenue in the vicinity of the now-defunct County Seat Mall. This photograph of the camp appeared on page 157 of George Neeley's "Valparaiso: A Pictorial History" publication, which is officially part of the Porter County Museum Collection.
Image: Independence, liberty, and freedom are depicted on the cover of "The Valpo Vane" from July 1939.
Did you know that Camp Calumet, Company 1583, of the Civilian Conservation Corps published a monthly newsletter called "The Valpo Vane" from January 1936 through February 1942?
You can view the PDFs of the newsletters on Steven Shook's inportercounty.org website thanks to a collaboration with the Indiana Historical Society.
