World War II
The World War II room features uniforms, artillery shells, weaponry, scrapbooks and other artifacts donated by Porter County veterans. The Lowenstein Memorial, formerly installed from 1945-1975 on the Valparaiso Courthouse lawn, lists Valparaiso men and women who contributed to the war effort. The memorial lists 1,100 men and women, 33 of whom died during the war effort. Visitors are also invited to read Frank Slagle’s personal history of his time as a prisoner of war and view a documentary discussing local involvement in battle and on the home front, as well as a description of how local industry played a role in the war effort.
