Help the Porter County Museum by managing the flow of information and documentation.
Administrative assistants help with general office functions such as filing, bulk mailings, data entry and various tasks as needed by museum staff.
Requirements: Interpersonal skills, expert organization, speed, accuracy and attention to detail. Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel and keyboarding skills of 30+ words per minute a plus.
The museum has a vast collection in need of preservation and organization.
Volunteers in this area will assist in the inventory and cataloging of the Museum’s collection. This is a great opportunity to view the items and areas that are rarely made available to the public.
Requirements: Attention to detail, willingness to work in teams and individually, knowledge of Past Perfect Software a plus.
The Porter County Museum hosts several school and community groups each year. Their experience is greatly improved by a knowledgeable tour guide.
A Tour Group Assistant will work with staff to lead structured tours of the Museum. During tours, the Tour Group Assistant will explain exhibits, answer visitor questions, and provide a personal touch to the museum experience. This position is ideal for future and retired teachers alike.
Requirements: Personable, ability to speak in front of groups of 5-30 people.
The Museum is in need of volunteers to welcome visitors. Greeters have the most important interactions with visitors and make a first and last impression.
Greeters provide information on a wide variety of topics including membership, future exhibits, research resources, and special events.
Requirements: Enjoy working with the public.
Museum Store Volunteer
The Porter County Museum is in need of volunteers to offer excellent customer service in the Museum Store.
Volunteers will maintain and restock displays, talk with customers, answer visitor questions, and bag purchases.
Requirements: Ability to count money, use technology to take credit/debit cards.
Special Events Volunteer
This position is a good way for volunteers to help contribute to the Museum’s effort fulfilling its mission without asking volunteers to commit to regular volunteer hours.
Special Events Volunteers agree to help with Museum special events. They may be asked to help plan an event, greet visitors, give directions, help with sign-in procedures, host visitors, serve refreshments, take photographs, and any other related activities.
